Growing up without a father, raised by a mother struggling with alcohol and substance abuse, Lopez said she often found herself home alone and had to learn how to cook, clean and take care of her younger siblings by the age of 5.       Isaac Phillips doesn’t believe in failure. Every time the 31-year-old Santee resident comes face to face with a life-changing challenge, he not only moves forward, he thrives.       Johana Ibarra

      Cuyamaca College

      By her reckoning, some of the teachers Johana Ibarra ran into as an immigrant at a San Diego elementary school were far from stellar. “I was there for two weeks before they realized I didn’t speak any English,” Ibarra said. “They thought I was just a quiet little girl who didn’t say much.” Ibarra’s solution: become an elementary school teacher herself.       Robert White

      Grossmont College

      Robert White’s goal of working as an occupational therapy assistant with children who have special needs has been challenged by the pandemic. While taking classes at Grossmont College, White had been handling a caseload of young clients so he could support himself and his new wife. When the pandemic hit, his caseload was cut in half and his billings were dramatically reduced. Read more

      Caitlyn Bullert

      Cuyamaca College

      Caitlyn Bullert had hit bottom. Unemployed, formerly homeless and a recovering alcoholic, the 53-year-old Spring Valley resident found hope at Cuyamaca College. “Invaluable,” Bullert said of the Rancho San Diego campus. “Just totally changed my life.”
